Being on the Boren Scholarship in Dakar, Senegal has been the experience of a lifetime! Not only have I improved my French through classes and conversations with my host family, I've done some amazing things. I swam in one of only two pink lakes in the world, rode a camel through sand dunes, bargained in Wolof for beautiful, colorful fabrics to make clothes, navigated the nightlife scene with my classmates, and listened to some great mbalax, among many other unforgettable experiences. I cannot wait to return to this beautiful city!

I really have had a great experience with AFLI, and I'm so thankful for this opportunity!

From waking up in the morning to the sound of the call to prayer of the neighborhood mosque to huddling around a bowl of ceebu jen during dinner with my host family, throughout this semester I’ve had the opportunity to immerse myself in a culture, which is so different from my own. I've found that Senegal is a country full of contrasts: I’ve worn my most modest clothes to visit the holy city of Touba and its Grande Mosque, but I’ve also gone downtown to clubs with my host siblings and local friends. Indeed, life in Dakar is a constant adventure.

The program provides a unique opportunity to learn about the languages, history, culture, and politics of Senegal with amazing professors and guest speakers who are very knowledgeable in their fields.

I have had a very enriching semester on the AFLI Senegal program. I was able to fully focus on learning French, both in class with the guidance of experienced instructors and out of class with a welcoming host family. The program exposed me to many different aspects of Senegalese culture, and I felt well-prepared to explore Dakar on my own and with my classmates. I can't wait to return!
